Germans comprise 17% of the U.S. population (about 51 million people), the country's largest self-reported ancestral group. California, Texas and Pennsylvania have the largest numbers of German origin, although upper Midwestern states, including Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and The Dakotas, have the highest proportion of German Americans at over one-third.
Of the four major U.S. regions, German was the most-reported ancestry in the Midwest, second in the West, and third in both the Northeast and the South. German was the top reported ancestry in 23 states, and it was one of the top five reported ancestries in every state except Maine and Rhode Island.

I learned in school that Germans were the largest European immigrant group to the? USA, but had forgotten how widespread their descendants are in this country. Thank you for reminding me. I'm a proud German-American!

Every serious ...
Every serious demographer knows that the English have always made up the largest ethnic group in the USA. They have been there so long that they just regard and identify themselves as Americans. Just look at the names from the Civil War period? and you will realise the root stock is English/Dutch prior to the arrival of Germans, Irish ,Italians and Jews in the second half of the century.

The? % of German heritage in Americans depends on where you live and immigrant dates.Large cities had more cultural mixing and ethic popularity varied with politics and world events.
I'm 7th generation German-American,German 94% with 3% Scottish ,2% Irish and 1% British add mix .
WWI & WWII caused many to deny their heritage to avoid uncomfortable questions.So many ppl don't realize their heritage.
Genealogical research has me at 15,000 ancestors that reads like a German phone book. : )

Take notice Maine was one of the states that is not? in the top five for reported ancestry of germans. This is a state were the current governor thinks it is ok to roll back child labor laws. And to get back to the topic of germans not being in the top 5. Reason number one and the only reason is because Maine was the first state to have Prohibition back in 1851. The Know Nothing party was strong in this state and they feared and hated the germans. This controlled german immigration in Maine.

@ohio12345a Yeah, but not all of us Americans are full Germans. My Grandma was German/Irish on my paternal side, and my maternal side my Mother is practically full German, she even has blue eyes. If that means? anything. haha I put Norseman because I've got some Swede in me.
